Societa Sportivo Lazio is a club based in the capital of Italy. Founded in the year 1900, it is most well known for its participation in football. In total, the club competes in 37 different sports, making it the most in number throughout Europe. They also have the distinction of being the oldest football club in Rome.
Being a well-organised club, their participation in the league came in the year 1912. Their sense of organisation and pride went like a hand in a glove, as evidence shows that in 1927, they were the only association that did not encourage the fascist efforts to unite all the clubs so as to play under the same banner. The rest were merged to form AS Roma.
Their entry into the Serie A came in 1929, and in only eight years they were runners up in the race for the Scudetto. Silvio Piola, an Italian football legend who is said to be one of the inventors of the bicycle kick, led this team. He was also responsible for two goals in the final of the 1938 FIFA World Cup that Italy won.
The post war era was not very fruitful for the Biancocelesti, as they were relegated to the Serie B in 1961. A comeback into the top flight two years later did not prove to be worthy of remembrance, as the decade was spent as a mere shadow of the team that once was.
While the 70’s started in the form of a demotion to the second best division, they came back very well to emphatically win the Scudetto for the first time, making them the champions of the 1973-74 season.
The coming decade was a shameful one, as the Aquilotti were relegated due to a betting scandal, and later docked points due to a second scandal. This became the darkest days for the club. But they soon bounced back in the early nineties due to the presence of players like Vieri, Crespo, and the Lazio legend Veron. This time, they mounted several challenges, and were ultimately successful in winning the Serie A in 2000. Prior to this, they also won the European Super Cup as well as the UEFA Cup Winners Cup.
The recent scandal did not change the way the performances of the club, as they have continued to be a strong opposition for any team in the Italian top flight.
