Unione Sportiva Lecce is a club that plays in the Serie A. Most of its history has been spent in the Serie B and Serie C, although in recent times the club has been bobbing up and down between the top two divisions.
Founded as Sporting Club Lecce in 1908, the club initially sported black and white, but would later change it to the Giallorossi of today.
1924 saw the club being dissolved, only to return three years later as Unione Sportiva Lecce, a name that has not been changed till date. 1930 saw the club compete in Serie B, but due to internal conflict, the club again melted away into obscurity for the next four years.
On returning to club football, the Salentini slowly slipped down to the fourth division and then came back to the Serie C putting out decent performances. Their efforts were rewarded with a promotion to the second division after World War II. Their stay in the new league was short-lived, as they were downgraded to the Serie C after just three years. They would spend seventeen frustrating years there.
Along with promotion in 1976, the Lupi savoured success in the form of the Coppa Italia. This period of the club remains a quiet one, marred only by the death of two of its players, Michele Lo Russo and Ciro Pezzella. The former remains the most capped Lecce player till date.
Their promotion to the top flight in 1985 kick-started what would turn out to be the starting point in moving up and down between the two leagues. Even the Serie C would see the club, only to run away from it and nosedive into the Serie A two seasons later.
As a slowly improving team, they find themselves on the brink of relegation from the Serie A this season. Like any other team, they will certainly want to avoid this.
They held the record for having the second best attack and the worst defence during the 2004/05 season. Till date, this is the only season in which the team with the worst defence has not been relegated.
