Reggina are the prime source of entertainment in the form of football in the scenic southern city of Reggio Calabria. Due to the colour of their uniform, they are aptly called Amaranto, meaning the Dark Reds.
Since its birth in 1914, the club has had name changes as many times as Inzaghi is caught offside. Their current name was christened in 1984, and has been retained till date.
After spending many years loitering in the lower divisions, the club finally made its first appearance in the Serie A during 1999. However, their stint with the big boys would last only two years as a relegation would see them going back to Serie B.
They came back strong from the relegation to return to the top league. The subsequent season saw them struggling in a relegation battle, eventually emerging triumphant in the playoff game against Atlanta.
The club was docked 15 points in 2006, due to being found guilty in a season that was filled with shock and shame. After an appeal, their punishment was condensed, and 11 points were taken away from their total. This season ended with the team shading the relegation zone by just one point, thus surviving demotion to the lower league.
The club continued its fascination with the relegation zone and it took three managerial changes to secure a spot for the next season. Their love for the bottom three has continued into this season, as they currently are in the drop zone with less than a point for every game they have played.
