This was an extremely interesting encounter, as the Egyptians had performed admirably against Brazil, but had nothing to show for their efforts. However, a stunning display of catenaccio made sure that the Azzurri suffered their first loss against an opponent from the continent of Africa.
The game started at a snail’s pace, as the Pharaohs played five men at the back and came out trying to soak up the pressure and tire out the opposition. But the men from the peninsula read into this and slowed down the game considerably. But all their efforts went in vain, as the designated hosts’ defensive line held. At times, when the Azzurri attack got past the defence, El-Hadary made sure that he was a wall between the posts. The keeper came to the rescue on multiple occasions; pulling many good saves out of the hat.
A little before halftime, Mohamed Homos rose for a towering header that found its way into the back of the net, leaving Buffon stranded. The header was a defensive error, as the player was left unmarked on a corner.
Upon re-emerging onto the pitch after the halftime team talk, Lippi had his men come out with an attacking mindset. However, all their efforts were matched by the solidarity shown by the opposition. The keeper produced some superb saves to keep them in the game, as the Pharaohs matched the designated visitors stride for stride.
After the ninety minutes of football, it became clear that Lippi’s men would have to win the game against Brazil to ensure progress in this competition. While the fact remains that a draw may turn out to be enough, should Egypt lose to USA, taking anything away from the South American side is a tough ask for any side in the world.
