The future of Pierluigi Casiraghi was heavily in doubt after the failure of the Azzurrini to reach the finals of the European Championship in Sweden. The Italian youngsters were the favourites to win the competition, but were sent out of the competition in the semi-finals to a German side that went on to win the competition.

Presently, it has been reported that Casiraghi has signed a new contract, which will see him hold the reins to the youth squad for two more years. This means that the Italy U-21 coach will be the one to lead the side into the Under-21 Euro 2011in Denmark.
