Roma hit man Vincenzo Montella has decided to hang up his boots after terminating his contract with the Lupi a year before expiry.

The ageing player, who is now 35, was a highly influential striker when Roma won the Scudetto in 2001. He was mostly used as a substitute during the season in which the Giallorossi won their third league title, but his effectiveness when brought on was unquestionable. Despite lacking starts, he became one of the heroes of Roman triumph that season.

L’Aeroplanino was a huge fan favourite at the Stadio Olimpico due to his ability in performing brilliantly during the Roman derby. Apart from scoring twice in his first derby game against Lazio in 1999, Montella is most widely known for his four goals when la Magica produced all their trickery to beat their immediate rivals by five goals to one. The four-goal triumph in the Derby della Capitale during 2002 remains a record that has been unsurpassed till date.

Apart from donning the Azzurri shirt on 20 occasions and scoring 3 goals, Montella made well over 200 appearances for the capital club, and is their fifth highest scorer with a tally of 94 goals to his name. The Lupi fans will certainly remember his days in Rome fondly.
