After twelve matches, the Serie B league table still does not have a clear-cut leader or even a group of two or three teams separating themselves from the rest of the pack.
The first nine teams are separated by a mere five points and at this early stage of the season it is too hard to tell which teams will be favourites for promotion. Ancona is first with 23 points while Empoli is ninth with 18 points. Only Salernitana with nine losses already look like a certainty for demotion.
This weekend witnessed a couple of top of the table clashes, particularly Ancona’s hosting of third placed Cesena which ended in a goalless draw. Fourth place Frosinone emphatically suffered against fifth place Sassuolo after a devastating 3-0 home loss. Finally, second place Lecce beat Empoli 1-0 at home.
The league table should become clearer in a few weeks after the clubs engage in more clashes which will help determine the stronger teams and better define the standings in terms of which clubs will fight for survival and which will compete for the title or play the role of spoilers.
Here are the results:
Albinoleffe 2-0 Gallipoli
Ancona 0-0 Cesena
Cittadella 1-1 Padova
Frosinone 0-3 Sassuolo
Grosseto 2-1 Ascoli
Lecce 1-0 Empoli
Modena 1-0 Vicenza
Reggina 3-1 Salernitana
Triestina 2-0 Torino
